Celebrating Literacy: The 2025 Battle of the Books

The Campbell River School District once again brought the magic of reading to life with its annual Battle of the Books competition on March 6. This cherished event continues to foster a love for reading among students and highlights the importance of literacy.
This year’s competition featured enthusiastic participants from various schools across the district. Elementary students in grades 3, 4, and 5, along with middle school students, showcased their literary knowledge and teamwork. Since October, these young readers have been preparing diligently, diving into a selection of six books chosen by our teacher-librarians.
The event is more than just a test of knowledge; it’s a celebration of creativity and camaraderie. Teams came prepared with unique names, signs, costumes, and chants, adding to the vibrant atmosphere at the École Phoenix Middle School library. Families and friends gathered to cheer on the participants, creating an electric and supportive environment.
In the grade 3 category, the Sandowne Elementary team, known as Monster Readers, took home the victory. Team members Carolyne Linnen, Jessica Pardo, and Charliee Ebdrup demonstrated impressive knowledge and teamwork.
The grade 4 competition saw the Meh Squad from École Willow Point emerge as winners. Luisa Sohmer, Lena Forsyth, and Jac Simonett represented their school with pride and skill.
For grade 5, the Miracle Animals of École des Deux Mondes claimed the title. Team members Aurelia Nammour, Marina Marshall, and Shay Kirkwood showcased their dedication and love for reading.
In the middle school category, Southgate’s team, George’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, consisting of Halen Claus, Madeline Morton, and Charley Glass, were crowned champions.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their hard work and enthusiasm. Your passion for reading is truly inspiring, and we are proud of every one of you.
A special thank you to school board Vice-Chair and Rotarian Craig Gillis for serving as the master of ceremonies, guiding us through the event with energy and enthusiasm. We also thank our teacher-librarians for their efforts in organizing this event and fostering a love for reading in our students.
We are grateful to this year’s sponsors, Coho Books, Daybreak Rotary, and Strathcona Gardens. Winners received a $20.00 gift certificate from Coho Books, encouraging them to continue their reading journey.
